Lost rankings due to the suspected Google update? You might not be wrong. Google has recently confirmed that they ran a “broad core algorithm update” earlier this month, impacting the appearance and rankings of some websites across search results.

Acknowledging the update Google posted on Twitter stating that updates of this kind take place several times a year, and that there is nothing specific that website owners can do to “fix“ their rankings after the core updates run. This does not mean that websites are bound to lose or gain rankings so if your rankings have not been affected, do not worry either – You have probably missed this one.

In addition to this Google explained that if a website’s rankings drop it does not necessarily mean that there is something wrong with the website/webpage… It is simply how they have changed their ranking models to now benefits sites/pages that were previously under-rewarded.

The announcement in which Google made via Twitter read as follows:

“Each day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Some are focused around specific improvements. Some are broad changes. Last week, we released a broad core algorithm update. We do these routinely several times per year.

As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains. There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded.

There’s no “fix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.”

What should you do?

As mentioned, these updates in the majority of circumstances cannot be avoided, and also we do not always know exactly when they are going to come. This is why it is vastly important for companies and websites owners to make sure that they are constantly doing the right things – From ensuring that the appearance and experiences of their websites are the best possible and that their marketing is suitable and correct.
